This week, we started our Rocks and Minerals unit in Science! This is always a fun opportunity for students to learn about how to identify and classify rocks and minerals by their physical characteristics. It's also a great time to learn about the ways rocks and minerals are used in everyday life. We've spent time hunting for special rocks and sorting, exploring, and measuring many different rocks and minerals. Ms. McComas even brought in her very special rock collection to share! We are certainly on our way to becoming ROCK Stars!
Last week, we had the opportunity to go on an awesome field trip to the Vulcan Rock Quarry in Kennesaw. The students got to tour the facility, explore many different types of rocks, and learn about the many way rocks are used. We even got to ride down into the "pit!" The students had so much fun learning about rocks... and they looked awesome in their TEAM PHILLIPS shirts!
We are "Digging Deep" in third grade! We launched our "Digging Deep" unit today with some awesome digging discoveries! Over the next few weeks, we will have Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies lessons, tasks, and activities that align with our "Digging Deep" theme!
Today, students explored the physical attributes of rocks and minerals. They used their new "Digging Deep" glasses to help them look deeply into these rocks and minerals. Mrs. Phillips-Taylor and Mrs. Tennison even stopped by to learn about the texture, luster, hardness, and color of these rocks and minerals. Here are some pictures of our "Digging Deep Rock Exploration!" Stay tuned for more pictures and posts about our adventures "Digging Deep" into the content! Our field trip to the Vulcan Rock Quarry was awesome! We learned so much about the three types of rocks and about minerals! It was so much fun!
