Last week, we had the opportunity to go on an awesome field trip to the Vulcan Rock Quarry in Kennesaw. The students got to tour the facility, explore many different types of rocks, and learn about the many way rocks are used. We even got to ride down into the "pit!" The students had so much fun learning about rocks... and they looked awesome in their TEAM PHILLIPS shirts!

Over the last 2 weeks, students have been researching and writing about historical figures. Our Social Studies standards highlight nine historical figures that have expanded the rights and freedoms of Americans. We have studied about many of these figures and the students have learned all about their life and the impact of their actions. For this project, we combined our Social Studies standards with our writing standards. The students have researched these figures, have composed reports about these figures, and created mobiles to represent the content. It's been so much fun!
One of the new elements that came with our third grade Common Core Standards was the addition of a research standard. The standard states that students will conduct research using print and digital sources. So, for our historical figures reports, students accessed and utilized a variety of resources! Using iPads, laptops, encyclopedias, textbooks, biographies, and original sources the students have become experts on the research process! Here are some pictures of the research process... |
