Over the last couple of weeks, we have embarked on a study of boats. We've learned about all different kinds of boats, how boats float, and how technology is used in boating. The students have been reading about and researching boats, writing about boats, solving math problems related to boats, and collaborating about how most effectively design a boat. To make the learning process more relevant, we mixed up the boat theme with the third grade Common Core Georgia Performance Standards. Students were able to apply their learning and take their knowledge to a deeper level. The project for this unit was building a boat to compete in a boat race. The students worked in teams to design and build their boat. The students took the boat project in many different directions and developed a diverse array of vessels. Several of the groups studied how sails work and built sails to enhance their boats. Other groups researched angles and and shapes to create streamline boats for the race. The end result was awesome and the students had SO much fun!

We have been VERY busy the last few weeks! In addition to taking the CRCT, we've learned a whole lot of new information!! We've had so much fun exploring this new content in many different ways. Here are some pictures of our learning in action!! ice melting race (applying our *heat* learning)fractions in math with ipadsthurgood marshall research projectOver the last 2 weeks, students have been researching and writing about historical figures. Our Social Studies standards highlight nine historical figures that have expanded the rights and freedoms of Americans. We have studied about many of these figures and the students have learned all about their life and the impact of their actions. For this project, we combined our Social Studies standards with our writing standards. The students have researched these figures, have composed reports about these figures, and created mobiles to represent the content. It's been so much fun!
One of the new elements that came with our third grade Common Core Standards was the addition of a research standard. The standard states that students will conduct research using print and digital sources. So, for our historical figures reports, students accessed and utilized a variety of resources! Using iPads, laptops, encyclopedias, textbooks, biographies, and original sources the students have become experts on the research process! Here are some pictures of the research process... |
